Does anyone else feel like they’re at a crossroads when it comes to this time of year? On one hand, I’m pining to be sipping a strawberry daiquiri on a beach somewhere, on the other I want to be snuggled up with a toffee nut latte, watching Hocus Pocus. One thing that never alters though with the changing season is my addiction to browsing for the best autumn buys on the high street. And so here I am, sharing 25 classic autumn staples you should invest in right now to last you for years to come.
25 Autumn Staples
The Camel Coat
A camel coat is truly one of the best investments I think you can make in autumn. It’s a versatile, neutral colour to help you transition from the summer months into the new season. Most styles are also quite lightweight so can be worn over thin jumpers or worn when the weather still hasn’t adjusted to full-blown cold.
The Black Ruffle Blouse
There’s just something about a black chiffon ruffle blouse for a date night or evening out in autumn that I adore. I think it’s the dark romantic vibe it conjures up and the way it plays with texture. Styled with a pair of leather trousers or tucked into a pencil skirt, it’s one of my autumn staples for eveningwear.
The Tailored Trousers
A classic trouser style that looks great with the season’s many layers. To me, autumn fashion is polished, elegant, and timeless, hence why a pair of tailored trousers is, to me, considered a key autumn staple. Whether you opt for beige, black, chocolate brown, or charcoal grey, you’re guaranteed to elevate your look by adding a pair of tailored trousers.
The Chelsea Boots
For me, no autumn wardrobe is complete without a pair of versatile Chelsea boots. They look just as great paired with a chiffon or knitted midi dress as they do with a pair of ankle-length jeans. I would recommend investing in a pair of quality leather Chelsea boots that will last you year after year. I have only just replaced my first pair of Office Chelsea boots after 8 years of wear!
Although blazers can be worn all year round, there’s something about autumn that makes me want to wear them constantly. Again, like the tailored trousers, the addition of a blazer instantly polishes any look. Whilst you can never go wrong with a classic black blazer, there are always some gorgeous prints that come out each A/W season to add a little something extra to your wardrobe. Think houndstooth, checks, and tweeds.
The Long -Sleeved Striped T-Shirt
A great alternative to chunky jumpers, especially to wear under coats, the long-sleeved t-shirt is most definitely an autumn staple when it comes to tops. Plain versions are super versatile but there’s something that bit more special about the long-sleeved striped t-shirt. Paired with tailored wide-leg or ankle-length trousers and a sleek belt, it’s a classic piece you’ll reach for time and time again. This season, I’m loving sage stripes for a gorgeous alternative to the usual navy.
The Leather Trousers
I know you’re envisaging Ross in his date’s bathroom in Friends but do not be afraid of the leather trouser. It’s an autumn staple that helps you play on texture and looks great year after year. Black is always a classic but try mixing it up with sumptuous chocolate browns and shades of deep green. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
The Ultra Mini Uggs
Will Ultra Mini Uggs ever not be having a moment? Certainly not in my wardrobe! I can’t get enough of my ultra minis and look forward to the day that I can drag them back for autumn. They’re honestly one of the most versatile footwear choices to style, and come in so many autumnal colours making them, in my eyes, a true staple for this time of year – if you can get your hands on them that is!
The Half-Zip Knit
The half-zip knit holds a special place in my heart. It’s a great way to smarten up your knitwear whilst still keeping cosy. With different styles and prints from ribbed merino wool to black and white jacquard, the half-knit zip has come a long way since its Breton stripe heyday. That being said, the latter continues to make a comeback year after year so shouldn’t be disregarded.
The Leather Blazer
A leather jacket is always an investment worth making, but I’ve come to realise that so is a leather blazer. For ultimate 90s icon vibes, go oversized and wear over a cropped white tee, blue jeans, and a pair of Chelsea boots. By night? Style over a mini dress and amp up the sex appeal with knee-high leather boots.
The Dark Floral Midi Dress
One of my favourite trends for autumn that never seems to disappear is dark florals. Make it a midi dress and add a pair of Chelsea or cowboy boots and a leather jacket, and you’re onto a winner this season.
The Tortoiseshell Claw Clip
A beautiful tortoiseshell claw clip adds an extra little something to your autumn outfit without costing the earth. I love incorporating decadent tortoiseshell into my A/W looks for a real vintage feel.
Gilets are definitely still having a moment. Again, they’re a fantastic way to layer up over chunky jumpers without feeling like you’re being strangled and also to style over long-sleeve t-shirts to make a cute early fall look when the weather is still really mild. I love to wear mine when walking the dogs as even if the weather out is chilly, being dragged by two large pugs can cause you to break quite a sweat.
The Oversized Slogan Jumper
All I wore this spring were oversized slogan jumpers and all I plan to wear this autumn are oversized slogan jumpers. Not only are they super comfy and look great styled over a pair of tailored trousers for a dressed-down tailored look, but there’s also something about their collegiate style that just screams Gilmore Girls to me.
The Leather Mini Skirt
Everyone needs a leather mini skirt in their wardrobe, especially for the autumn.
The Shaped Bag
Just as I love playing with textures when it comes to my bags in autumn, I’m equally as obsessed with mixing up the shapes. There’s just something about an oval brown 90s-style shoulder bag or a boxy burgundy croc print number that screams autumn to me.
The Long Cardigan
A long-knit cardigan has been one of my autumn staples for as long as I can remember. It’s my go-to piece for throwing on over a t-shirt and jeans or a crop top and joggers to add an extra layer around the house. They’re also a great alternative to a coat when the weather hasn’t quite hit peak coldness.
The Printed Mini Skirt
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – preppy patterns make a comeback year after year so you won’t regret adding a printed mini skirt to your collection. From tartan checks to houndstooth in all the autumnal shades, there’s a style out there to suit everyone.
The Chunky Loafers
Chunky loafers never go out of style. From designer to high-street, they always make an appearance every year when autumn rolls around. Paired with some cute lurex or plain black or white socks and a mini skirt, they add an instant preppy vibe to any look.
The Puffer Jacket
The puffer jacket is showing no signs of going anywhere. Perfect for dog walks, keeping cosy, and dressing down an outfit, my love for the puffer will certainly live on this Autumn. One of my all-time favourite autumn outfits is a combination of my brown puffer jacket, an oversized slogan jumper, and a pair of tailored trousers with trainers.
The Oversized Wool Jumper
My oversized alpaca blend wool jumper is by far one of my most worn pieces and best investment buys, making its appearance every autumn/winter without fail. I love to style mine over a pair of tailored trousers and trainers for a dressed-down yet put-together look. Ensure maximum oversizing and size up from your usual.
The Leather Knee-High Boots
A pair of good quality leather knee-high boots will see you through every autumn season to come, looking incredible styled with midi skirts and dark autumnal print dresses alike. If you’re brave enough, they also look fantastic with a mini skirt and blazer combo.
The Sweater Vest
The knitted sweater vest is back again for autumn and I couldn’t be happier. I love to wear mine over an oversized shirt and paired with chunky ankle boots or thigh-high boots for an evening look.
The Gold Jewellery
Gold jewellery is my go-to always, but especially as the season turns, I can’t get enough. Whether it’s delicate pieces or statement styles, a dash of gold in your accessories can really make an outfit.
The Leather Tote Bag
As the season changes, so does your style. For me, autumn is all about playing with textures and I find the best way to do this is through my bags. From buttery soft leather totes to slouchy suede styles in shades of green, rust, and brown, I cannot get enough of what fashion has to offer when it comes to A/W tote bags.
