There are so many super-ingredients out there nowadays when it comes to skincare, it’s hard to know where to start. Trying to work out your AHAs from your BHAs and whether you need hyaluronic or marine hyaluronic acid with B5, B6, or B7 properties can be an absolute minefield. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a beauty junkie and complex skincare really excites me but sometimes, you can’t beat going back to basics. I’m talking getting your five-a-day via your skincare routine with some good old Vitamin C (but don’t forget to keep actually eating fruit and veg of course…).
Vitamin C isn’t the newest kid on the block when it comes to ingredients, but it is certainly one of the most effective for your skin. But what exactly is vitamin C? Basically, it’s an anti-aging super ingredient. You’ll find it under the name Ascorbic Acid in the list of ingredients on the back of your products and it’s essentially one of the best ingredients for protecting your skin from environmental aggressors, thanks to its anti-aging properties and its role in the production of collagen.
So now you know the basics of the super-ingredient and why you need it in your life, I’ve curated a little list of my go-to Vitamin C products. Whether you’re looking to incorporate vit C into your skincare routine or you already do and want to find some new hero products, I’ve trialled and tested four Vitamin C based products to help you out.
Before I start telling you the benefits of using this product, let me just say one thing: the SMELL. I could honestly sit and smell this toner all day. But its super strong scent of oranges is only the beginning of its superpowers. Part of the PIXI Vitamin C range, this is their cult Glow Tonic but with all the added benefits of Vitamin C. A blend of white willow bark and fruit extracts work together to perform a gentle chemical exfoliation that helps eliminate imperfections and dead skin for a smoother skin texture. Oh, and did I mention it smells amazing?
I have been drooling over Drunk Elephant’s products since they launched and desperate to try them but scared to take the plunge, I found the perfect option in the form of the Drunk Elephant Rise & Glow Duo. Buying mini’s is a great way to try out a new, expensive brand. After seeing a few reviews describing the C-Firma Day Serum as too sticky, I can safely say I don’t agree. In fact, I find the formula to be very fast drying and I think it’s actually the firming effect of the product you can feel, rather than any stickiness. It contains 15% pure L-ascorbic acid (a potent form of Vitamin C) as well as ferulic acid and Vitamin E. But the ingredients that intrigue me the most as a skincare junkie are the pumpkin ferment and pomegranate extracts which allow the serum to enzymatically dissolve dead surface skin cells for a smooth skin texture. And boy is my skin smooth after using this product!
Dermalogica kindly gifted me their brand new Biolumin C Eye Serum to try and I am hooked. I have tried a lot of eye creams/gels over the years and I have to say this has been my favourite. It’s gel like formula has such a cooling effect on the eye area and I can honestly say my dark circles seemed a lot lighter and much less puffy. And who might you ask is responsible for this brightening effect? Our good old friend Vitamin C of course. Other key ingredients are Arjun Tree Extract (boosting skin’s resilience which is necessary for such a delicate part of the face), Tremella Mushroom (locking in moisture) and Chia Seed Oil (rich in antioxidants to help quench free radicals). An expensive product but a little goes a very long way and it is worth the investment if you want something to help brighten and protect the eye area.
For another skin super boost, I have been loving the Rodial Vit C Brightening Mask. This is the first time I’ve used a gel mask and I’ve got to say, I’m hooked. As much as I love a good peel off or mud mask, sometimes a simple wash off mask can be a nice change (and much less messy!). Infused with 5% pure Vitamin C and a blend of 10% exfoliating fruit AHAs (water-soluble acids made from sugary fruits), not only does this mask help reduce the signs of ageing, but it helps illuminate the skin also. After using it twice a week, my skin looks so gloomy despite its many imperfections! This mask has a really light-weight, cooling feel to it, with only a thin layer needed, and is best left on for around 15-20 minutes to allow the ingredients to soak in.
